Heavy textiles
I thought I would spend this week focusing on the work of Saidat Animasaun. She has been a dedicated artist in the 2024 Dwelling scene, contributing her time to making a zine, and writing a thoughtful essay for issue five.
Saidat is a London-based Nigerian contemporary artist, exploring complex subjects rooted in race theory and domesticity, and as a young, emerging artist, her works are interwoven with the difficulties of becoming an adult.
‘I’ve grown to believe that what you do in the mornings (ie. what you have for breakfast) strongly influences how your day goes.’
Through digital photography and layers of hand painted images, her zine Purple Breakfast explores the simplicity of everyday life and the challenges of living alone and coming to the decision of what to eat.
Made in the span of a month, the zine honours routine, and the mundane moments of everyday life. The time constraints forced Saidat to take in every detail, leading her to the quaint and thoughtful zine.
Accompanied by poems, photography, paintings and drawings, this DwellingZine is a remarkable show of Saidat’s talent. Head to the zine shop to purchase your own copy!
Stitches of Solidarity
Saidat wrote a very thought-provoking essay for issue five of Dwelling Magazine, putting the hidden work of Palestinian and African-American women at the forefront. This sensitive piece acknowledges the unpaid, overworked and forgotten labourers of our history, whilst also appreciating their work and the intricate determination from women in different cultures. Stitches of Solidarity is a blatant and strong essay, recognising that feminism comes in many forms, and it definitely does not shy away from the reader.
See more of Saidat’s work on her website here!
Don’t forget that Creator’s Catch Up is returning on the 25th of January, 1-3pm at the Jindera Pioneer Museum! There is an entry fee up to $10, but there will be a free raffle for everyone who attends to win some Dwelling gifts. I hope to see you there!
Thank you for being here 💛
